Centennial Meeting

Hi Team,

One of our first tasks is to identify how we are going to work with the past presidents regarding the Centennial Meeting in DC in 2015. I'd like your feedback on the following.

  • What do we want the past presidents to do for us?
  • How can we organize the past presidents?
  • Should we invite the past presidents to a special Centennial Planning session at NCGE?
Please let me know your thoughts.

Mike

  1. Are we getting ahead of ourselves, or do we just need more context...

Who is planning that conference? Do we know from them what (if anything) is already being asked of past presidents, or have they given us a special task to perform?

Just don't want to burn a lot of energy coming at it in a way that doesn't align with the conference planning effort.

    1. Bob,

The Centennial meeting is being planned as usual. During the business meeting in Portland we were asked to see if the past presidents could add to the event through their contacts, history, images, ideas, etc. We are initially asked how to get the contacts with the presidents organized.

  2. If our task is to try to gather advice, connections, ideas, monetary help, and pictures, I would think a start would be to ask the past presidents for advice, connections and ideas. Perhaps we could design a brief questionnaire...what is a personal and/or organizational highlight or milestone experienced during your term?

Monetary help and pictures are another category. If monetary help is needed, the entire NCGE membership needs to be tapped. (one thought) I wonder if the NCGE office has a file of photos from ‘way back??’

I like the idea of inviting Past Presidents to a special 'brainstorming' session, unless we need to get a start before the next meeting. We could mail the survey or questionnaire in advance.

    1. Good ideas, Marilyn (and thanks for adding to the context of our charge, Mike).

Perhaps something like a looking back / looking ahead theme would be helpful? I'm thinking of finding a way to frame their reflections on changes in geography education over the years and their vision for the future. Could be an interesting panel session and perhaps a display in the entry area or exhibit hall ??
